Local history
Thornbury’s branch library opened on Clyde Street on 3 August 1955, with the Northcote Leader reporting “We make history as branch library opens”. By the 1980s the space no longer kept up with the needs of public libraries, and after council amalgamation in 1994 the branch was performing less well than the others; in 1997 the Leader ran “Library threatened”, and the library left the building that December. A toy library moved in, and the site is now SPAN Community House.

Banned in Australia in 1936 at Nazi Germany’s request, the play was first performed off the back of a truck to dodge the ban. Ninety years on, Katie Sfetkidis and Mark Wilson stage it the same way, outdoors at Trades Hall, with a post-show discussion on the Saturday.
