Local history

Bundoora Homestead, where a history tour runs on Saturday 24 October, began in 1899 when the horse breeder John Matthew Vincent Smith bought the 600-acre Bundoora Park and held a competition for a new homestead design; Sydney Herbert Wilson, who also designed Malvern Town Hall, won the £50 prize. Smith sold the property to the Commonwealth in 1920 and it became a convalescent farm, described as Victoria’s first psychiatric facility for returned servicemen. The grounds later housed the Victoria Police stud and a day hospital, which closed in 1993, and Darebin Council restored the homestead and opened it to the community in 2001.
