Local history
Long before Cactus Room's DIY gig nights and the Thornbury Crawl turned High St into a live-music strip, the Thornbury Picture Palace was already drawing crowds there -- Darebin's first local picture theatre, screening films in a rented hall for years before moving into larger purpose-built premises in 1912. The suburb itself got its name almost by chance: settler Job Smith named his farm "Thornbury" around 1850 after a property near his English birthplace, and when the land boom of the 1880s finally made his holding valuable, he sold at a 1,500% profit on ground nobody had wanted decades before.

MESS Studio Tour — hands-on with a theremin, a Fairlight and other rare synths
A free guided tour of MESS's collection of historically significant electronic instruments — including a theremin built by Léon Theremin himself (c.1933) and Australia's own Fairlight CMI — which aren't kept behind glass. Led by artists and the studio's co-founders. Runs on the fourth Saturday of each month.
