Local history

Preston -- home to this week's Victorian Chess Championship round and VRDL bouts -- got its name almost by accident. Edward Wood opened a store at the corner of High and Wood Streets in 1850 to serve local farmers and gold-rush travellers; when it became the area's first post office in 1856, it was named Preston after a village in Sussex. The area just south of Wood's store kept its own separate identity as "Gowerville" into the 1880s, before the two blurred into the one suburb people now know.
