Local history

High Street Thornbury -- home to this week's Cactus Room gigs -- takes its name from a small act of nostalgia: around 1850, settler Job Smith named his farm there after a property near his English birthplace, and the name eventually stuck to the whole suburb. The road itself is older than the name: Robert Hoddle surveyed it in 1837 as part of Melbourne's original grid. Sales were slow for decades until the 1880s land boom, when the promise of a railway line through Thornbury (opened 1889) sent prices soaring -- Smith, who'd held onto his land, eventually sold at a reported 1,500% profit.
