Local history
Northcote Social Club (the building behind this week's Social Sanctuary FUSE Festival Takeover, 301 High St) started life in 1854 as the Shannon Hotel, a rough pub favoured by teamsters and bullock drivers. In July 1891, a meeting held in its bar formed the local branch of the Progressive Political League -- the organisation that went on to become the Australian Labor Party. It kept the name Commercial Hotel for over a century before a 2004 renovation gave it its current identity.
